Australian Building Codes Board

Client(s) Australian Building Codes Board, Attorney General’s Department, Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission
Audience Architects, builders, developers, the disabled community and regulators
Aim To provide clear and concise information on disabled access to buildings
Modules 2
Duration 45 minutes each
Description This project was technologically complex and required us to liaise with federal government departments in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne.

Our task was to turn a large amount of legislative information into an interesting and practical learning experience supplemented by video interaction with experts from the various stakeholders.

We also had to accommodate the needs of the disabled community. We looked at existing user interfaces for the visual and aurally impaired and while they functioned they tended to be for a specific disability or required too much work on the part of the user. We designed a user interface that included the following.

  • Large fonts
  • Large buttons
  • Comprehensive voice-over
  • Extended voice-over for the visually impaired
  • Transcripts of all video audio
  • Transcripts of all lesson information and summaries in Arial 12 pt Word format

Features Disabled access.  Interactive video answers from experts
Media types Video, voice-over, interactive questions, photos, diagrams, plans.
Challenges To design an interface for access by those with sight, hearing and or mobility disability.
Delivery CD-ROM
Outcomes The modules were well received and gained approval by the disability community.
